  • Uber, Lyft and Taxi Drivers: Do You Need to Register for GST/HST?

If you earn income driving for Uber, Lyft, or another commercial ridesharing service, you may have more tax obligations than you realize.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has recently highlighted its registration requirements for rideshare drivers and taxi operators.

One important rule is that commercial rideshare and taxi drivers generally must register for GST/HST regardless of how much income they earn.

Does the $30,000 Small Supplier Threshold Apply?

For many small businesses, GST/HST registration becomes mandatory once they exceed the applicable $30,000 small supplier threshold.

However, commercial rideshare drivers and taxi operators are treated differently.

If you provide taxable commercial passenger transportation services, you must generally register for GST/HST even if your earnings are below $30,000.

For example, a driver earning only $10,000 annually from commercial ridesharing would still generally be required to register for GST/HST.

In Alberta, the applicable GST rate is 5%.

What Do You Need to Register?

If you are operating as a self-employed rideshare driver or taxi operator, you generally need:

    • A CRA Business Number (BN)
    • A GST/HST program account

The effective date of GST/HST registration is generally the date you begin providing taxable passenger transportation services.

If you have already started driving but have not registered, you should review your situation promptly, as backdated registration may be required.

Can Rideshare Drivers Deduct Business Expenses?

In addition to understanding GST obligations, self-employed drivers should maintain accurate records of their business income and expenses.

Depending on the circumstances, deductible expenses may include:

    • Business-related fuel costs
    • Vehicle maintenance and repairs
    • Vehicle insurance
    • Vehicle financing costs, subject to applicable rules
    • Other eligible expenses directly related to earning business income

Where a vehicle is used for both personal and business purposes, only the eligible business-use portion of expenses can generally be claimed.

Maintaining a mileage log and keeping receipts is important for supporting these deductions.
